====================================================================
====================================================================

Great to have you back!! :)

I will register my first thoughts now. Probably will come back later. The whole concept is essentially out of Ego/possessiveness/ownership rights. It is a device to "keep" one's "own things" with oneself through guilt rather than love. Just like a child doesn't want to share its 'own' things.

I was just browsing for some devotional songs to hear. I came across your blog. Excellent Question you ve raised. The entire ethics, laws, rules and discipline for human starts from here. The only difference between human and animal is "Karpu". I hope I no need to explain more about it.

welcome back (where were you?). I think you should also ask, why this concept is almost exclusibely associated only with women :) ? Why is it not as big a deal with man as it is with a woman? Is it because they assume in cases of loss of it, the man is always the offender, instigator? But isn't kaRpu also used in the context of adultery or promiscuous relations? In that case, it better apply to man as well. And man first needs to follow it, before offering nuggets of wisdom to women.

I shall come to the topic of "karpu - Its definition" a little later! But for now, I must say that we are definitely biased, if not in theory as the purists of our Indian tradition may claim, atleast in practice. And this has been the case for some 2.3 millenia... Thats how long recorded Tamil literature goes.

I'll give a small example. The garland that momen wear is called "Maalai" and it is a closed circuit! I mean, ends are tied. The one men wear is called "Thaar", with dangling ends (eg. Andaal, thiruchendur murugan sport it).

This reflects the attitude that women are to be bound and men can be a little wobbly (ippadi, appadi!!).......... Doesn't it?

(This is actually but not confined to @ the second comment:)
Are we using the terms chastity/fidelity (karpu) and virginity interchangeably? I am not in agreement with that. The former has to do with the mind and spirit while the latter is purely a physical state of one's body (genetials to be precise).
Karpu, in my view has to do with faithfulness to one's partner, irresepective of one's gender.

If, out of mutual love and trust, a man and woman enjoy sexual union, I would not consider that as a loss of Karpu/chastity. It is a loss of virginity that has occured.

Thats in the ideal world of course, when the man and woman end up in marriage (Kalavu ozhukkam in sangam literature).

We are not dwelling in an ideal world, are we? All hell breaks loose when that trust is breached and betrayal happens. The girl is vulnerable and not the guy (for obvious reasons I need not delve into). Thats perhaps why we have all the seemingly draconian laws of moral conduct that binds women!!!(the topic resonates here, "Karpu Karuppaanathaa?"!!!)

I am not justifying the guys that breach trust. Its the ground reality I speak.

Fine.... Having said that I am ok with pre-marital intercourse between say a man and a woman engaged/set to be married, are the men folk prepared to deal with a situation where they come to know their would be wife was earlier betrayed by some one else she trusted before?

In my view, the girl has only lost her virginity and not Karpu.... Its as good as a rape... She trusted some one and she was let down... That was not a crime on her part.
I do not know how many families would view that way....

Living in a non ideal world, I think we need to accept certain norms and abide. I do not deny the fact that women are seemingly ostracized, but isn't there good reason to it?

Kulla narigalum onaaigalum irukkum varaiyil maan kuttiyai konjam katti vaithaal thavaru illaiye!!! Kombu vanthathum suthanthiramaai thiriyalaame!!!

Note: Hindu marriage system does not view a woman as a baby making machine. The wife is called a saki - Friend.

A brahmachaari, vaanaprastha and sanyaasi do nithya karma for his benefit. Only a Grihastha can do Agnihothram and yagnam for lokakshemam - benefit of the globe. "paathni vathasya agnihothram bhavathi" says Veda!!!

Hi Sowmya,
Having read my previous post, albeit as a third party, I am prompted to digress a little and delve into the question why does the question of pre-marital intercourse arise in love? What is then, the purpose of marriage? If sex was the sole reason for getting married, that is self defeating! Why does this hue and cry about chastity arise at all? It has been so in almost all major cultures/civilizations where some form of conformity has been expected of individuals and every now and then, here and there (everywhere!!)someone has managed to breach the code!!
The basic need in my own humble opinion, (Maslow's need theory) is not sex! I mean it!! I opine, sex drive/libido (or whatever fancy word you may conjure up to call that!) is only a reincarnation/projection of something more innate to us.... THE NEED TO PROCREATE - I WANT MY GENES TO BE PASSED ON. This need is so supremely important, that nature DOESNT TAKE A CHANCE... She wants us to indulge with interest and passion. Thats why this sugar coating of pleasure attached to it (ilavasa inaippu??).

What makes me sad is this: Pleasure - recreation was a free package added to procreation. The reverse is what is being perceived... sex has become a recreation for many a youth and procreation an ilavasa inaippu... Else why this rise in maiden abortions? I lived and worked for 2 years closelywith a historic hospital (the town itself was known for that hospital and its prison), and I know what I am stating!!!!

Karpu has nothing to do with, as I stated earlier today, with intercourse.... I can be a virgin and still lose Karpu..... Thats what Jesus says "A man that looks at a woman with lust has committed adultery with her".....

Ungal karuthukkalai aavalodu ethir paarkkiraen!!

Anbudan,

Bhuvaneshwar

Virginity is no where related to karpu. As long as you share your body with the persons whom you love.

I am glad that we have been conditioned by the social concepts like marriage, family, parental guidance etc...but beliefs and definitions apply to everyone irrespective of gender.

Chastity or virginity is a very narrow meaning of the word in discussion here. Over the years it has been misused, abused and erratically handled by opportunistic people(I will avoid discussing about politicians here...)

Both genders have learnt to be independent...the older social structure is no more relevant...child marriage is almost abolished...

Education and job opportunities will break many such one sided implementation of chauvinistic/opportunistic definitions.

Every man is the part of this society and he also conditioned with the beliefs what the society has..

Well...again ,he has the right to decide what he need and what he does not want.

My point is, i can even say , my wish is.. even though, they have such kind of beliefs, let them adopt that with the clarity.so that, they feel the meaning of the relationship in a better way.

Thanks for the feedback :)
